Dress Code 17-18

Middle & High School Student Dress Code

In order to avoid disrupting the educational process, Wilson Hall students are expected to dress neatly and appropriately. The administration reserves the right to determine appropriate attire and deny attendance to any student who does not comply. Student dress must meet code requirements regardless of whether or not a student wears a jacket or other external covering.

Males & Females

T-Shirts
With either short- or long-sleeves may be worn as long as they are completely tucked in and are Wilson Hall t-shirts or plain t-shirts (no writing or graphics) that have no tears, holes, or frayed areas. The only appropriate t-shirts are Wilson Hall t-shirts or plain t-shirts.

 

Footwear
Must be worn at all times on campus.
May wear most sandals; however, molded rubber athletic sandals, crocs and other shower wear are not permitted.
With five-toes are not allowed.

Headwear
Is not appropriate during the school day. All headwear shall be left in vehicles or submitted to the office upon arrival to school.

Shorts
May not be shorter than three (3) inches above the knee. Shorts must be appropriate for school and not athletic wear.

Other items which are not acceptable include:
Tattoos (must be covered at all times).
Body piercing.
Clothing that is frayed, has holes, or is cut-off.
Athletic pants except with permission on special spirit days.
Denim overalls/coveralls.
Gothic clothing—including trench coats, long chains, and clothing with skull/bones.
Camouflage shirts, pants, jackets, or other like-patterned outerwear (including those with a Wilson Hall logo or name).
Extreme haircuts and unnatural hair colors.
Tie-dyed attire (including those with Wilson Hall logo or name).

Males

Shirts
Must be tucked in completely.
With collars are encouraged.
Should not be worn unbuttoned as a jacket.

Pants/Shorts
Must be worn with the waistband at the hips and may not be excessively baggy.

Hair
Should be kept neatly trimmed and combed, above the eyebrows (at all times), the ears, and the collar. Long hair tucked behind the ears or hair falling over the eyebrows does not meet the standard.

Other
Piercings for males are not allowed.
Males must maintain a clean-shaven face and may not wear sideburns below the base of the ear.

Females

Shirts/Tops/Dresses
May not allow undergarments to be exposed.
Tank top, halter top, racer-back, or off-the-shoulder styles may not be worn.
Tops with thin straps (smaller than 2 inches), exposed backs, midriffs, or low-cut styles may not be worn. Cold-shoulder blouses may be worn as long as undergarments are covered and straps are wide enough.
If wearing a sheer article of clothing, the clothing underneath must meet dress code coverage requirements.
Should not be worn unbuttoned as a jacket.

Pants/Shorts/Skirts/Dresses
Must be worn in an appropriate manner.
May not be excessively tight.
May not be yoga pants.
May not be shorter than 3 inches above the knee when measured in the front, may not be shorter than 3 inches from the crease on the back of the knee, and the slit of a skirt or dress may not extend above fingertip length.
Skirts shorter than 3 inches (dollar bill width) above the knee may not be worn with bare legs, hose, or sheer leggings.

Leggings
Blouses or dressy shirts may be worn over leggings, but must be longer than fingertips all the way around. The blouse should not have a slit or raised side above fingertip length or be shorter than fingertips in the front, sides, or back.
Baggy t-shirts, sweatshirts, or unbuttoned collared shirts may not be worn with leggings.
If a skirt is worn over thick, opaque leggings, the skirt must be fingertip length as well.

Hair
Should be kept neatly trimmed and combed.

 

Lower School Dress Code

Students shall be required to show proper attention to personal cleanliness, neatness and appearance. Each student should be dressed appropriately for school. Students not adhering to the dress code will be sent to the appropriate administrator for disciplinary purposes. The Administration reserves the right to determine appropriate attire.

Males & Females

T-Shirts
With either short- or long-sleeves may be worn as long as they are tucked in and are appropriate and neat with no tears, holes, or frayed areas. No shirts will contain or allude to alcohol, drugs, nudity, profanity, etc. Appropriate shirts include: solid, Wilson Hall, church, military, and college. These brands may also be allowed on a trial basis: Simply Southern, Southern Tide, Vineyard Vine, Carolina Fin, Palmetto Time, Southern Marsh, and Patagonia.

Footwear
Must be worn at all times on campus.
Students in PS3-fourth grade must wear shoes with a strap on the back of the shoe.

Hats/Caps
Are not appropriate during the school day.

Shorts
Are acceptable attire. For students in grades three through five, gym/nylon shorts are acceptable only on PE days and shorts must be at least fingertip length. The administration reserves the right to determine which shorts are deemed acceptable meaning too short or too tight.

Pants
Athletic pants are not allowed except with permission.

Hair
Extreme haircuts and unnatural hair colors are not allowed. Students should keep their hair neatly trimmed and combed.

Fifth Graders
All fifth grades are to abide by a stricter dress code, Similar to the Upper School, except in the length of shorts which must be at least finger tip length.

Males

Shirts
Must be tucked in completely at all times.

Hair
Should be kept neatly trimmed and combed, above the eyebrows (at all times), the ears, and the collar. Long hair tucked behind the ears or hair falling over the eyebrows does not meet the standard.

Females

Shirts/Tops/Leggings
Shirts must not allow under garments to be exposed.
Shirts must not be longer than shorts.
Tank tops, tops with straps that are smaller than 2 inches, halter tops, racer-back tops, off the shoulder styles, tops exposing the midriff even when arms are raised may not be worn.
If wearing a thin/sheer article of clothing, the clothing underneath must meet dress code coverage requirements.
Leggings or exercise tights with t shirts are not allowed on girls in grades 1-5.
Blouses or dresses may be worn with leggings, but the blouses must be at least fingertip length.
Must be tucked in unless the designer intended to have it worn un-tucked.

 School Shirts
A Wilson Hall collared shirt is required to be worn by students in grades PS4-5th grade while on field trips. Parents have the opportunity to order shirts on the first day of school. Additional shirts will be on sale in the lower school.
