Wilson Hall maintains a strong and varied athletic program providing our students with the opportunity to participate in interscholastic competition against independent and public schools throughout the state. Participation in athletics provides a unique opportunity for molding character and building lasting friendships. The student-athletes at Wilson Hall enjoy outstanding support from our student body, as well as from our parents, grandparents and alumni.

Even though Wilson Hall has one of the most successful athletic programs in the South Carolina Independent Schools Association (SCISA), the primary focus is always on academics. Students must maintain a level of academic proficiency above the required state standards in order to practice or participate with an athletic team. With some of the strongest academic talents in the state as well as some of the most talented athletes, Wilson Hall proves each year that academics and athletics are not exclusive of one another, but are complementary.  Wilson Hall competes in the AAA classification, which is for the largest schools in SCISA, in all sports.

The South Carolina Independent School Association annually presents The President's Cup to the school with the most outstanding athletic program for that particular year. The award is based upon a school's total athletic performance in a school year, including region standing, playoff appearances and championships won. Wilson Hall has won the President's Cup on three occasions: 1995, 1996, and 2000.

The Bill Simpson Award is presented annually by the SCISA to an outstanding graduating male and female student who best exemplifies the academic and athletic qualities that Mr. Simpson represented throughout his career as the SCISA Athletic Secretary. Mr. Simpson, an educator first and foremost, emphasized the importance of academic performance. A school's Headmaster may nominate a graduating senior male and female for this award. Criteria for selection includes the following: Headmaster's recommendation; SAT score; class rank; student service record; academic and athletic achievement; Coaches' recommendations, and community service record. The Bill Simpson Award is the highest honor bestowed upon a student-athlete in the South Carolina Independent School Association. Wilson Hall has had seven graduating seniors chosen for this honor, the most of any school in the region.

Recent State Championships:
Girls Basketball 1995, 1996, 1997 Golf 1995, 2000, 2001
Boys Basketball 2000 Girls Cross-Country 1996, 1997
Baseball 2000, 2001, 2004 Girls Track 2002, 2003, 2004

BARON FANS
Wilson Hall is very well known throughout the state for its fan support. In fact, Wilson Hall usually has a larger crowd at away games than the home team does. Our bleachers are not just filled with faculty, students and parents; they also include grandparents, alumni and parents of graduates. Our home varsity football games usually have over 1,000 people on the side of the Barons, which is a large number considering that there are less than 250 students in the high school.

At football games, students can be found lining the sidelines and end zones chanting and cheering on the team, often with pots and pans and shakers to increase the noise level. At basketball games, the "Baron Fans" are easily noticeable not only because of their cheering as a group, but also because of the special tee shirts they wear. Fan support is not limited to the larger sports like baseball, football and basketball, but it is also evident at other sports such as track, soccer and tennis.

PRE-GAME MEALS
Another tradition at Wilson Hall is the pre-game meal. Hosted at the home of a different player each time, the pre-game meal provides the opportunity for the team, coaches and parents to socialize before the game. The meals range from casual cook-outs to catered dinners.

PARENTS NIGHT
To recognize the support of the parents of athletes, several teams host a Parents Night. Although each team has a different method of recognizing the parents, most of them involve a dinner prior to the game. Some teams also announce the names of the parents as they walk onto the field with their child, and some teams have the player deliver a rose to their mother in the stands. Parents are such an important part of the athletic program, this is just a small way of expressing our appreciation.

AWARDS BANQUET
The Athletic Association hosts an awards banquet at the conclusion of each of the three seasons. Held in the gym, the banquets begin with a carry-in dinner provided by the parents. After the dinner, each coach has the opportunity to recognize the members of his or her team and present awards. In turn, the athletes have the chance to speak about their coach and the experiences of the season.
