Seventh Grade Reading Research and Life / Study Skills
This course is designed to instruct and familiarize students in the application of basic
study skills. The course addresses note taking, test taking skills, organizational/time management skills, listening skills and critical reading skills. It also addresses interpersonal skills which includes communication (oral and written) skills, self acceptance/self improvement, dealing with disappointment and developing a good,
positive attitude toward oneself, life and other people.
Eighth Grade Literature
This course is designed to emphasize reading through a thematic approach to different forms of literature. The course complements Eighth Grade Grammar and Composition. Students must read two novels during the semester.
Eighth Grade Grammar and Composition
This course is designed to help students begin to view themselves as active participants in their development in all phases of written expression, including composition and creative writing, grammar and usage, and word building. This course complements Eighth Grade Literature.
English I - College Preparatory
This course is designed to present students with a comprehensive approach to literature,
grammar, composition, and vocabulary appropriate for their age level. The course offers opportunities to read and write critically, to participate in class discussions, and to develop those skills which promote independent thinking. Students must read two novels during the summer.
English I - Honors
This is a literature-based course involving reading and discussion of material to allow students to develop their own abilities to understand and appreciate literature. It is designed to give students with a high level of academic ability and motivation the preparation for a level of success consistent with those abilities. During the summer, student must read three novels.
English II - College Preparatory
This course is a literature-based approach designed to give students the preparation needed for ultimate success in English at the college level. Major emphasis is on developing those analytical and writing skills considered essential for attaining that goal. Students must read two novels during the summer in preparation for this course.
English II - Honors - American Literature
This course is designed for those students who are preparing for AP English in the twelfth
grade. Therefore, the level of performance must be exceptional. Students should obtain an extensive knowledge of the American experience as it is revealed through the writings of those cultures that make up our history. Selections begin with the oral tradition of Native Americans and continue through the modern twentieth century writers. Emphasis is placed on themes which developed as a result of the establishment of America. Students must read two novels during the summer.
English III - College Preparatory - American Literature
This course provides a comprehensive review of the body of literature associated with the
United States. Selections begin with the oral tradition of Native Americans and continue through the modern twentieth century writers. Emphasis is placed on themes which developed as a
result of the American experience. Students must read two novels during the summer.
English III - Honors - British Literature
This course is designed to provide an intensive look at British Literature from the Anglo
Saxon period to Modern Times. In preparation for the literary context of the course, three novels are required for summer reading.
Senior Composition
This course is designed to provide students with opportunities to refine their writing
skills. English IV-CP is designed to complement this course.
English IV - College Preparatory
This course is designed to offer students an opportunity to study British writers from the
Anglo-Saxon Period through the Twentieth Century. As preparation for the literary context of this course two novels are required for summer reading. This course is complemented by Senior Composition.
Advanced Placement English
The purpose of Advanced Placement English is twofold: 1) To give students experience in a
college freshman English class; 2) To help students prepare for taking the AP English
Literature Exam. Students are required to critically analyze literature in both class discussions and written essays. Three novels must be read during the summer by students.
Speech/Theatre Arts (One Semester)
This course is designed to allow students to explore various elements of oral communication including speech, improvisation, oral interpretation, theatre history, and play production. Students must possess a willingness to try new things, a respect for the efforts of their classmates, and a group activity.
Southern Literature (One Semester)
A literature based course, Southern Literature has been designed to encourage students to
appreciate the character, culture and communities of the South. The course will begin with writers from the 1800's and a section entitled “The New South” and continue to the present. This course will focus on those southern authors who have not been previously studied in other literature courses offered at Wilson Hall.
