RECENT HONORS AND AWARDS

2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR
The average SAT score for the Class of 2009 was 1164, with the top 25% of the class scoring an average of 1328. The highest score in the class was a 1530.

Of the 63 seniors, 92% received a merit-based scholarship offer.  The Class of 2009 earned over $5.45 million in college scholarships.

Two seniors were named  National Merit Scholars for scoring in the top one-half of one-percent in the nation on the PSAT.

A senior was one of 100 students in the nation, an one of only two in the state, to receive the Principal's Leadership Award presented by the National Assoc. of Secondary School Principals.

A senior won the Bill Simpson Award which is presented to the stop scholar/athlete in the state and is the highest award given by SC Independent School Assoc. to a student.

Four seniors received the following full academic scholarships, often the highest awarded by the college or university: Anderson University - Fellows Scholar (2), Arizona State University - National Merit Scholar, The Citadel - Citadel Scholar, North Carolina State University - Park Scholar, University of Arizona - National Scholar, University of Oklahoma - National Scholar (2), & University of Texas - National Merit Scholar (2).

When combining merit-based scholarship offers, four members of the Class of 2009 were able to attend college on full academic scholarships to Furman University (3), University of South Carolina & Wofford College (2).

Five seniors were named Palmetto Fellows Scholars.

In 2008, 60 students became eligible to receive college credit because of their performance on the Advanced Placement Exams.  Four students received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award, six students received the AP Scholar with Honor Award, and eleven students received the AP Scholar Award.

In the Duke University Talent Identification Program, six seventh-graders received state-level recognition for scoring at least a 510 on either section of the SAT. Over 60% of the seventh grade qualified for the Duke TIP by scoring in the top 5% nationally on the Stanford Achievement Test.

The High School Academic Team won the SCISA State Championship for the second consecutive year.

A fifth grader won first place in a national essay competition sponsored by Weekly Reader; her essay was published by the magazine.

A senior was selected as one of ten state finalists in the Wendy's High School Heisman program that recognizes the state's top scholar-athletes.

Nine seniors were named SCISA Honor Graduates for scoring at least 1100 on the SAT and earning a minimum GPA of 3.5 in academic subjects in each of the first seven semesters of high school.

Seventeen juniors were named Junior Scholars by ten different colleges and universities in South Carolina.

Wilson Hall received more awards in the SCISA State Publication Competition than any other school. The newspaper was named the Best in State for the 16th year, and won awards for Best News Article and Best Photography. The yearbook was named the Best in State for the 9th time, won the award for Best Writing, and received honorable mentions for photography, theme development, and layout & design.  The literary magazine received an honorable mention.

Three juniors were chosen to attend the Palmetto Girls State Convention, and six juniors were selected for the Palmetto Boys Sate Convention.

Two sophomores were was chosen to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Summer Seminar.

The Drama Workshop Theater received an honorable mention for its ensemble performance at the Palmetto Dramatic Association festival, a senior received an Excellent rating for individual acting, and a senior and sophomore received an honorable mention for acting.

An eighth grader won the Middle School Essay Contest at the SCISA State Literary & Drama Competition.  At the same competition, a fifth grader placed third and a fourth grader placed fourth in the poetry recitation contest, and a third-grader placed second in the storytelling contest.

At the Sumter County Fair Art Show, a senior won Best in Show and a junior won second place for Best in Show.  In total, students won 12 ribbons at the art show. 

In the SCISA State Art Competition, a freshman placed first, a senior placed second, a senior placed third, and a sophomore received an honorable mention. 

At the SCISA State Music Festival, ten students received medals.  Earning gold medals were a senior for violin, two seniors for voice, a sophomore, freshman and seventh grader for piano, a sophomore for guitar, and an eighth grader for trumpet.  Receiving silver medals were a senior for voice and a freshman for piano.


Two seniors and an eighth grader were named the High School Youth of the Year for Sumter County by the Sumter Optimist Clubs.  The award recognizes the most well rounded students in Sumter County.

A sixth grader won first place for the City of Sumter in the Patriot Pen Essay Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  A sixth grader placed second and a sixth grader placed third in the competition.

A senior won first place in the University of South Carolina Sumter Spring Poetry Contest, and six students received an honorable mention.

A sophomore won an essay contest sponsored by the Sumter County Cultural Commission, and a senior received an honorable mention.

A senior received the Governor's Citizenship Award for outstanding leadership, service and character.

A sophomore received a gold medal, Summa Cum Laude, for his top performance on the National Latin Exam.  Two students received a silver medal, Maxima Cum Laude.  Four students received a Magna Cum Laude certificate, and six students received a Cum Laude certificate.

Eight Latin students received ribbons at the S.C. Junior Classical League Spring Forum.

A senior and a freshman each received a gold medal for performing in the top two-percent in the state on the National Spanish Exam.  Four students received a silver medal and four students received a bronze medal.

Two seniors were crowned King of the Iris at the Sumter Iris Festival.  A scholarship competition, it recognizes the most well rounded students in Sumter County.

The Chess Team placed third in the SCISA State Tournament, and a senior placed second in individual competition.

2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR
The average SAT score for the Class of 2008 was 1184, with the top 25% of the class scoring an average of 1380. The highest score in the class was a 1490.

Of the 51 seniors, 92% received a merit-based scholarship offer.  The Class of 2008 earned over $3.55 million in college scholarships.

A senior was named a National Merit Semifinalist for scoring in the top one-half of one-percent in the nation on the PSAT, and three seniors were named National Merit Commended Students for scoring in the top three-percent in the nation.

Four seniors were named Palmetto Fellows Scholars.

Six seniors received the following full academic scholarships, often the highest awarded by the college or university: Anderson Fellow - Anderson University, Citadel Scholar - The Citadel, Park Scholar - North Carolina State University, Anna Todd Wofford Scholar - Wofford College, and Benjamin I. Wofford Scholar - Wofford College.  In addition, two seniors received a full U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship and a senior received a full U.S. Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship.

When combining merit-based scholarship offers, twelve members of the Class of 2008 are attending college on full academic scholarships to the following schools: The Citadel, Converse, Clemson (5), College of Charleston (2), Columbia International University, University of South Carolina and Wofford College.

A seventh-grader received national recognition in the Duke University Talent Identification Program by scoring at least a 660 on the math section or at least a 650 on the critical reading section of the SAT, and four seventh-graders received state-level recognition for scoring at least a 510 on either section of the SAT. Over 60% of the seventh grade qualified for the Duke TIP by scoring in the top 5% nationally on the Stanford Achievement Test.

A senior finished third in individual competition at the SCISA High School Math Meet, and the team placed third overall.

A sixth-grader and a seventh-grader won the SCISA Regional Spelling Bee for their respective grade

Four juniors were selected to attend the S.C. Governor's School for Academics summer program, and three freshmen were chosen to attend the S.C. Governor's School for Arts & Humanities summer academy.

Four juniors were chosen to attend the Palmetto Girls State Convention, and six juniors were selected for the Palmetto Boys Sate Convention.

A sophomore was chosen to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Summer Seminar.

The sixth grade reading teacher was selected as one of three finalists in the state for the SCISA State Teacher of the Year Award.

The Drama Workshop Theater received a Superior rating for its ensemble performance at the Palmetto Dramatic Association festival, a sophomore and a junior each received Excellent ratings for individual acting, and a junior received an honorable mention for playwriting.

A seventh-grader won the middle school Best Actress Award at the SCISA State Literary & Drama Competition.  The Middle School Drama Team won the SCISA Regional Drama Competition and placed third in the state competition.

A senior won the High School Essay Contest at the SCISA State Literary & Drama Competition.  At the same competition, two freshmen each placed third in their divisions in the high school oral interpretation contest, a fourth-grader placed third in the poetry recitation contest, and a third-grader placed third in the storytelling contest.

A freshman was recognized as a "Most Effective Witness" during the S.C. Bar Association's Regional Mock Trial Competition.

At the Sumter County Fair Art Show, a junior won Best in Show.  In total, students won 22 ribbons, including seven first place ribbons, at the art show. 

In the SCISA State Art Competition, a senior placed first, a sophomore placed second, and a junior received an honorable mention. 

At the SCISA State Music Festival, five students received medals.  Earning gold medals were a junior for violin, a freshman for flute, and an eighth-grader and two sophomores for piano.  A seventh-grader received a silver medal for trumpet.

A sophomore and a freshman each won first place ribbons at the Latin Forum sponsored by the College of Charleston Department of Classics.  A total of 11 ribbons was won by seven students.

A junior received a gold medal for performing in the top one-percent in the state on the National Spanish Exam.  Two juniors and two sophomores each received a bronze medal.

A senior was crowned King of the Iris at the Sumter Iris Festival.  A scholarship competition, it recognizes the most well rounded students in Sumter County.
