The school’s newspaper, The Baron Bulletin, won the Best in State award in the S.C. Independent School Assoc. State Publication Competition. This is the 27th time the newspaper, which is advised by Mr. Sean Hoskins and Mrs. Elizabeth Hyatt, has won this award. The newspaper, for which senior Emily Banghart served as the editor-in-chief, also won the awards for Best Photography and Best Layout & Design. Emily won the award for Best Editorial for “Animal Testing Should be Banned in the US” and junior Hayley Champion won the award for Best News Article for “Prisma Health Launches the Community Health Mobile Unit.” Junior Miller Jones received an honorable mention for his sports feature “Etienne Plans to Return to Clemson for Senior Year.” The 2019 edition of the yearbook, Idylls, won the Best Photography award and received honorable mentions for copywriting, layout & design, and theme development. Sarah McCreight ‘19 served as the editor and Mr. Hoskins, Mrs. Hyatt, and Mr. Ben McIver are the advisors for the yearbook.
Senior Mary Catherine Matthews received the Larry K. Watt Award presented by the S.C. Independent School Association to recognize the academic service-based achievements of seniors. It is one of the highest awards presented by the association which has over 110 member schools, and Mary Catherine is the only student who attends a AAA school in SCISA to receive the award. To be eligible for the award, the student must be nominated by the school and recommended by the headmaster. The nominee must have a minimum of 50 hours of documented community service after June of the student’s junior year (Mary Catherine has 440 hours) and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Once nominated, the student must submit a 500-word essay outlining the importance of community service as well as three letters of recommendation from school or community leaders who have personally witnessed their service initiatives.
