Rogers Wins State Art Competition

Caroline Rogers

Senior Caroline Rogers won a first place ribbon in the S.C. Independent School Assoc. State Art and Photography Show. She won for her division in the altered photography category. Receiving a second place ribbon was junior Cori Moore and earning third place ribbons were seniors Audrey Ann Atkinson and Tricia DuBose, eighth grader Bynum Kelley, and third grader Logan Schumacher. The art teachers are Mrs. Ashley Lareau, Ms. Mary Ann Reames and Mrs. Tara Schumacher.

Lyles Player of the Week

Senior Anna Lyles, a member of the varsity cross-country and track teams, was named the WLTX News 19 Player of the Week. For this program News 19 honors exceptional high school seniors who participate in varsity sports, maintain a high GPA, and are outstanding citizens in their community. Area coaches send letters to News 19 recommending student athletes, and Anna was nominated by her cross-country coach, Mr. Tom O’Hare. News 19 Sports presents each winner with a letter jacket and a plaque, and the student is then featured in a 30-second promotional announcement that airs for one week.


Chess Team Wins State Championship

The two-time defending state champion high school chess team won first place in the S.C. Independent School Assoc. State Chess Tournament held at the North Hope Center in Sumter. Juniors Davis Kellogg and Alex Price tied for first place in individual competition which had over 100 students competing.

Advised by Mrs. Carmen McCaffrey, the team consisted of the following students in addition to Alex and Davis: seniors Jacob Cox, Robert James, Edward McMillan and Sam Watford; juniors Banks Burns, Sam Hilferty, Sean Jackson, Michael Lowery and James Munford; sophomore Andrew McCaffrey; and freshmen Mitchell Matthews and Luke Reuwer.

Salzer Signs with NC State

Senior Christian Salzer signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at North Carolina State University during a ceremony held in the Nash Student Center on November 12. Christian is a member of Wilson Hall’s golf team which won the S.C. Independent School Assoc. AAA state championship in 2015.

NYC Art Appreciation Trip

Escorted by art teachers Mrs. Ashley Lareau and Ms. Mary Ann Reames, students in the high school art classes visited New York City for the annual art appreciation trip November 7 – 10. To learn more about art history, the group visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, and toured the Art Students’ League. The trip also provided the opportunity for the students to experience the culture of New York City as they visited the SoHo and Chinatown areas, went to one of two Broadway musicals, either The Lion King or Wicked, and went to a Broadway play, The 39 Steps. The students also visited Central Park, Madison Avenue, Times Square and Union Square.
