Because of its service to the S.C. Independent School Association (SCISA), Wilson Hall was presented the Charles J. Beach Jr. Volunteer of the Year Award at the SCISA Fall Heads’ Conference. Mr. Fred Moulton, Headmaster, accepted the award on the school’s behalf. This is the third time that Wilson Hall has received this honor.
Specifically, the Wilson Hall Art Department was presented the award for its efforts in creating the new format of the SCISA State Art Show. Mr. Moulton presented the plaque to Mrs. Ashley Lareau and Mrs. Tara Schumacher, art teachers, and Ms. Mary Ann Reames, the former Art Department Chair who retired at the end of the school year.
SCISA is a non-profit, voluntary association of more than 120 independent schools that serve more than 37,000 teachers and students. Founded in 1965, the state of South Carolina incorporated SCISA as an exclusively educational organization with the responsibilities of establishing accreditation standards, coordinating academic and athletic competition, and providing professional development for member organizations.
Wilson Hall is now a certified Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) school by the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA). To earn the certification, the school met SCISA STEAM standards that include having an inquiry-based learning environment for students that encourages problem solving, students working independently and collaboratively, and students demonstrating creative and critical thinking. Other STEAM standards include students using technology resources to conduct research, learning through performance-based assessments, and students demonstrating oral and verbal communication skills to express and elaborate their conclusions. Students in each class, from three-year-old preschool through twelfth grade and across all academic disciplines, participate in STEAM activities.
