Senior Liza Segars was recognized as the WACH-TV/Grow Financial Scholar Athlete of the Year during halftime of the varsity boys’ basketball in the Nash Student Center on January 29. In addition to a plaque, she was presented a scholarship check for $5,000 sponsored by Grow Financial.
Senior student athletes from public and private high schools in the five-county Midlands region are eligible for the award, and the judging criteria included academic achievement, athletic achievement, community activities, and creativity of a DVD submitted by the student. Liza was one of 22 Scholar Athletes of the Week who were eligible for the Athlete of the Year Award.
A starting point guard on the basketball team, Liza has been selected to play in the North/South All-Star game and has been named to the All-Region team. She is also a member of the track and field team. An honors student enrolled in six Advanced Placement classes this year alone, she has a 4.638 GPA. Liza has a long list of community service projects which includes a mission trip to Africa this past summer. A leader on campus, she serves as the Senior Class President, National Honor Society Vice President, and Beta Club Treasurer.
