2007-2008 SCHOOL YEAR
The average SAT score for the Class of 2008 was 1184, with the top 25% of the class scoring an average of
1380. The highest score in the class was a 1490.
Of the 51 seniors, 92% received a merit-based scholarship offer. The Class
of 2008 earned over $3.55 million in college scholarships.
A senior was named a National Merit Semifinalist for scoring in the top one-half
of one-percent in the nation on the PSAT, and three seniors were named National Merit Commended Students for scoring in the
top three-percent in the nation.
Four seniors were named Palmetto Fellows Scholars.
Six seniors received the following full academic scholarships, often the highest
awarded by the college or university: Anderson Fellow - Anderson University,
Citadel Scholar - The Citadel, Park Scholar - North Carolina State University,
Anna Todd Wofford Scholar - Wofford College, and Benjamin I. Wofford Scholar -
Wofford College. In addition, two seniors received a full U.S. Army
Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship and a senior received a full U.S. Air
Force Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarship.
When combining merit-based scholarship offers, twelve members of the Class of
2008 are attending college on full academic scholarships to the following
schools: The Citadel, Converse, Clemson (5), College of Charleston (2), Columbia
International University, University of South Carolina and Wofford College.
In 2008, 60 students became eligible to receive college credit because of their
performance on the Advanced Placement Exams. Four students received the
AP Scholar with Distinction Award, six students received the AP Scholar with
Honor Award, and eleven students received the AP Scholar Award.
A seventh-grader received national recognition in the Duke University Talent Identification Program by scoring
at least a 660 on the math section or at least a 650 on the critical reading
section of the SAT, and four seventh-graders received state-level recognition
for scoring at least a 510 on either section of the SAT. Over 60% of the seventh grade qualified for the Duke TIP by scoring in the top 5% nationally on the Stanford Achievement Test.
The High School Academic Team won the SCISA State
Championship, and the Middle School Academic Team won the SCISA Region Championship.
A senior finished third in individual competition at the SCISA High School Math
Meet, and the team placed third overall.
Eight seniors were named SCISA Honor Graduates for scoring at least 1100 on the
SAT and earning a minimum GPA of 3.5 in academic subjects in each of the first
seven semesters of high school.
A sixth-grader and a seventh-grader won the SCISA Regional Spelling Bee for
their respective grade
Seventeen juniors were named Junior Scholars by ten different
colleges and universities in South Carolina.
Wilson Hall received more awards in the SCISA State Publication Competition than any other school. The newspaper was named the Best in State for the 15th
year, won awards for Best Editorial and Best Photography, and received an
honorable mention for Best Layout & Design. The yearbook received an honorable
mention for Best in State, won the award for Best Photography, and received an
honorable mention for Best Copy Writing.
Four juniors were selected to attend the S.C. Governor's
School for Academics summer program, and three freshmen were chosen to attend
the S.C. Governor's School for Arts & Humanities summer academy.
Four juniors were chosen to attend the Palmetto Girls State Convention, and six
juniors were selected for the Palmetto Boys Sate Convention.
A sophomore was chosen to attend the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Summer
Seminar.
The sixth grade reading teacher was selected as one of three finalists in the state for the SCISA State Teacher of the Year Award.
The Drama Workshop Theater received a Superior rating for its ensemble
performance at the Palmetto Dramatic Association festival, a sophomore and a
junior each received Excellent ratings for individual acting, and a junior
received an honorable mention for playwriting.
A seventh-grader won the middle school Best Actress Award at the SCISA State
Literary & Drama Competition. The Middle School Drama Team won the SCISA
Regional Drama Competition and placed third in the state competition.
A senior won the High School Essay Contest at the SCISA State Literary & Drama
Competition. At the same competition, two freshmen each placed third in
their divisions in the high school oral interpretation contest, a fourth-grader
placed third in the poetry recitation contest, and a third-grader placed third
in the storytelling contest.
A freshman was recognized as a "Most Effective Witness" during the S.C. Bar
Association's Regional Mock Trial Competition.
At the Sumter County Fair Art Show, a junior won Best in Show.
In total, students won 22 ribbons, including seven first place ribbons, at the art show.
In the SCISA State Art
Competition, a senior placed first, a sophomore placed second, and a junior
received an honorable mention.
At the SCISA State Music Festival, five
students received medals. Earning gold medals were a junior for violin, a
freshman for flute, and an eighth-grader and two sophomores for piano. A
seventh-grader received a silver medal for trumpet.
A senior was named a state finalist in the Wendy's High School Heisman program
that recognizes the state's top scholar-athletes.
A senior was named the High School Youth Optimist of the Year for Sumter County
by the Sumter Optimist Clubs. The award recognizes the most well rounded
students in Sumter County.
A senior received the Principal's Leadership Award from the National Association
of Secondary School Principals.
A sixth grader won first place for the City of Sumter in the Patriot Pen Essay
Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A sixth grader placed
second and a sixth grader placed third in the competition.
A senior won first place in the University of South Carolina Sumter Spring
Poetry Contest. Nine students received an honorable mention.
A freshman and an eighth grader each received a gold medal, Summa Cum Laude, for their
top performance on the National Latin Exam. A sophomore, a freshman and
two eighth graders each received a silver medal, Maxima Cum Laude. A
freshman and an eighth grader each received a Magna Cum Laude certificate.
A sophomore and a freshman each won first place ribbons at the Latin Forum
sponsored by the College of Charleston Department of Classics. A total of
11 ribbons was won by seven students.
A junior received a gold medal
for performing in the top one-percent in the state on the National Spanish Exam.
Two juniors and two sophomores each received a bronze medal.
A senior was crowned King of the Iris at the Sumter Iris Festival. A
scholarship competition, it recognizes the most well rounded students in Sumter
County.

The Middle School Debate Team placed second in the SCISA

The school won the SCISA Regional Spelling Bee and three students advanced to
the SCISA State Spelling Bee. An eighth grader finished fifth in individual competition at the
SCISA State Middle School Math Meet, and the team finished 7th out of 41 teams. Wilson Hall's team placed 2nd in the University of South Carolina Sumter Science/Math Competition, and
two students won awards in individual competition.
Wilson Hall received more awards in the SCISA State Publication Competition than any other school. The newspaper was named the Best in State for the 14th year and garnered an individual writing award and two other major awards. The yearbook was named the Best in State for the
9th year and also won two other major awards. The literary magazine
received an honorable mention.
A senior received the S.C. Governor's Citizenship Award, and
an eighth grader was named the Sumter Optimist Club Outstanding Middle School
Youth of the Year.

two juniors were chosen to attend the Palmetto Girls State Convention, and six
junior were selected for the Palmetto Boys Sate Convention. Two sophomores

An upper school art teachers was selected as one of three finalists in the state for the
SCISA State Teacher of the Year Award, and an upper school science teacher was
named the Teacher of the Year by the U.S. Air Force Association.
A sixth grader won the Best Actor Award at the SCISA State Drama and Literary
Competition, and an eighth grader received an honorable mention in acting.
The Middle School Drama Competition Team won the SCISA Regional Competition and
placed second in the state competition. At the State Drama & Literary
Competition, a third grader and a second grader placed second in the
storytelling competition, and a fourth grader placed second in the poetry
competition. The High School Drama Team received a Superior ratings for
performance of a one-act play and for ensemble acting at the Palmetto Dramatic
Assoc. Festival, and two students received Excellent ratings for individual
acting.
At the Sumter County Fair Art Show, a senior won first place overall, a
sophomore won second place overall, and a senior won third place overall.
In total, students won 19 ribbons at the art show. In the SCISA State Art
Competition, a junior placed second and a freshman placed third. A
sophomore received an honorable mention in the Fifth Congressional District Art
Competition, and a sophomore placed third in an art competition sponsored by the
National Endowment for the Arts. At the SCISA State Music Festival, four
students received a gold medal and three students received a silver medal.
A sixth grader won first place in the Sumter Elks American Essay Contest, and
sophomores won the top three awards in the "Big Read" essay contest sponsored by
the National Endowment for the Arts.
A junior and a sophomore received a Cum Laude certificate of merit for their
performance on the National Latin Exam. A freshman received a gold medal
for performing in the top one-percent in the state on the National Spanish Exam,
and three students received a bronze medal.
